Ubuntu GNOME Keyboard Shortcuts

This is a list of Ubuntu Keyboard shortcuts I’ve discovered from various sources.  I believe many of them are specific to the GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) desktop environment, although I’ve never used KDE so I don’t know for sure.  If you are looking for another shortcut or want to make your own, just head to System → Preferences → Keyboard Shortcuts as shown in the image below.

GNOME Keyboard Shortcuts

Alt+Enter
Show file properties without using right click menu.
Alt+F1
Open Application menu
Alt+F2
Open Quick Run Application Dialog Box (type “gksu application” in Quick Run Application Dialog Box to run as root)
Alt+F4
Close window
Alt+F5
Return window to ‘normal’ or previous size
Alt+F7
Move the current window (with mouse or keyboard)
Alt+F8
Resize current window (again, with mouse or keyboard)
Alt+F9
Minimize current window
Alt+F10
Maximize current window
Alt+left drag
Move any window
Alt+middle drag
Resize any window
Alt+Space
Open window menu
Alt+Tab
Switch between currently-open windows
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
Restart X session (the graphical networking interface), and return to login
Ctrl+Alt+D
Hide all windows and show Desktop
Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Open the Shutdown menu
Ctrl+Alt+F1-F7
switch virtual consoles (F7 is the GUI)
Ctrl+Alt+l
Lock the screen quickly
Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right
Switch between workspaces
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left/Right
Move the current window to another workspace
Ctrl+h
Show hidden files in nautilus
Middle Click
Paste from clipboard in X. The X clipboard is independent of the GNOME clipboard (Used in BASH)
Select with Mouse
Copy to clipboard in X
Super+Tab
Cool way to flip through open windows, but you can only do this if you’ve disabled Expo using the ccsm CompizConfig Settings Manager.
